Interview with Make-up Artist Clint Fernandes

I know I have made you guys wait so long to post this. I apologize, as Clint was busy with different projects as well. But, finally the most awaited interview is here! First and foremost I would like to thank Clint from the bottom of my heart, you are the best! Thank you for being so generous and answering my bajillion question interview. ♥ Ladies, show Clint how much we heart him!

What surprises you most about working as a makeup artist?
People who don't have the right features to be photogenic still feel that make up would make them beautiful!

Could you name a few actresses you have worked with, and share their beauty secrets? Any favorite faces you absolutely love working with?
Malika Arora drinks loads of water throughout the day, as a result her skin is Flawless. I love working with Katrina Kaif and Laila Rouass they are simply beautiful, make up just becomes a compliment to the face here and not the center, which is nice.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Everywhere, literally EVERYWHERE.

What feature do you love to accentuate?
Eyes, lips and cheeks, also the skin.

Do you love working any specific brands or lines? Could you came some of your favorite products?
Shiseido Eye Shadows and Foundations; Chanel Mascaras, Foundations, and Lipsticks; Avon Focus Kohl Eye Liner and Lip Products, Shu Uemura Blushes.

Could you share your three beauty tips you could not live without?
Clean your skin constantly from time to time, use a sunscreen under make up or by itself ALL THE TIME, drink lots of water.

What are some make-up brushes you can't live without? Which brands do you use?
Nothing of the sort, I use a varied set of completely different brands, as long as the quality is good the brand does not matter.

What made you choose make-up artistry as a profession?
Because it's very easy.

What are your steps for the perfect, flawless, natural look?
Cleanse the skin first prep it with a bit of moisturizer and follow with a very light liquid foundation, use a concealer where needed and set with a light translucent powder. Use a soft blush on the apples of the cheeks and dust a light bronzer on the outer edges of the face. for the eyes keep the shadow on the lid natural and caramel, accent the socket with a darker brown and the outer corners of the eyes with the same shade of brown to lift the eye gently. Finish with mascara and the lips with a transparent tinted gloss.

Could you give us a few make-up products that suit desi skin tones?
All the products i mentioned above in 'my favorites' list are functional even on desi skin tones.

How does make-up help define a woman's personality?
Surely.. it does reflect how she feels inside. and also her personality or rather the personality that she wants to project.

How would you define true beauty?
Children.

What is a quick way to change a day look to a special occasion or nighttime face?
Changing the lip color to something more dramatic does help change the look a lot. Also using some heavy liner with kohl can make it look different.

What advice can you offer women on how to best choose the right colors for their face?
One needs to go into a store to test all the colors on themselves. Though the rule is:
fair skin tones- cool colors to mid tone
wheatish/olive skin tones- mid tone to warmer colors
darker and dusky skin tones- warmer colors.

What is the most important make-up tip we all should consider?
Remove all traces of makeup after you get back home. and don't over do the look when getting out. Less is more.

What is the best way for a woman to improve her overall beauty?
Exercise to flush the skin of all its toxins, detox regularly, cleanse the skin regularly and keep your beauty products in a cold place if you keep them for a long time like a refrigerator.

What are the current make-up trends for 2008?
The glam bohemian look is very in for summer, it would continue until winter, its glamorous and super chic.

How much art is actually involved in make-up application?
Depends if one wants to be creative then there is some art involved or it can be very functional.

What are some beauty essentials for women on the go?
Compact, mascara, long stay lip color, light blush.

What's the worst thing a woman can do to her face?
Not clean it after a long day.

What do you think are best/worst trends in the make-up industry right now?
None really, its only after the time has past that we realize that some trends could have been improved on, thats why they come back years later.

Can I Be An Actor

Can I Be An Actor Biography
How to Become a Film and Television Actor

10 Easy Steps to Becoming an Actor
Have you ever dreamed of one day becoming a famous Hollywood actor? If so, the first thing you need to realize is that this dream can become a reality if you're willing to put in the time, training, dedication, passion and patience required to make it in Hollywood.
If you've always wondered how to become a film or television actor, then here are ten steps that may not get you the role of a lifetime, but they will help you to treat your acting career as a career and not simply as something you choose to do for fun.

Keep in mind that if you're hoping to become a theater actor, some of these may not apply to you. However, all ten steps are good to keep in mind no matter what type of acting you decide to pursue.

Step 1: Learn How to Act

Seems like a given, doesn't it? But I can't tell you the number of people that come out to Hollywood thinking that all they need to do is get a job as a waiter at some popular restaurant, meet an agent, get "discovered" and then it's nothing but champagne and caviar from there. Uh...no.

Acting is first and foremost a craft. The best of the Hollywood actors understand this and no matter how far they have come in their careers, they are constantly looking to improve upon their craft. They take classes, work with acting and dialogue coaches, they study life experiences, etc. They know full well that even after a lifetime of work and study, they may never reach absolute perfection.

So, for you, it's imperative that you take a wide variety of acting classes. Work in a wide variety of styles with a as many different groups of people that you can find. Try it all. From Shakespeare to comedy, from improv to cinema verite -- the more you know, the more well rounded you'll be and ultimately, the better prepared you'll be for whatever roles come your way.

Step 2: Location, Location, Location

I hate telling people this, but if you hope to work in film and/or television as an actor, you need to go where the work is. Now, that doesn't necessarily doom you to living in Los Angeles or New York. After all, there are plenty of acting jobs in Vancouver, Montreal, Chicago, Miami, Baltimore, etc.

But, New York and Los Angeles are where most of the casting directors work and live. So, many of the shows that are shot in Canada or other cities within the U.S. are still cast in LA or New York. So, even though you don't necessarily need to move here, keep in mind that it is where most of the action is.

Step 3: Be Willing to do What it Takes

No, that doesn't mean what you think it means. Don't worry about the "casting couch." But you must be willing to do what it takes for the sake of your craft. You might ultimately have to sacrifice certain aspects of your life to ensure that you will have success as a working Hollywood actor.

You must take the time to master your craft. If that means sacrificing a relationship or a few friendships along the way, so be it. I know that sounds rather harsh, but acting is not a 9-5 job by any stretch.

If you're lucky enough to land a role in a major film or television production, realize that this is not the glamorous Hollywood job you might've thought it would be.

It's a lot of work, often 14-20 hours per day, in all kinds of conditions and at least initially, for not much money.

Even actors who make millions of dollars per picture still must "work" to earn their keep. They are on location for months at a time and every day they commit themselves both emotionally and physically to their roles. It can be extremely exhausting. You must prepare yourself both mentally and physically for this type of challenge.

It's one of the many reasons why Hollywood stars have trainers, psychologists, plastic surgeons, nutritionists and divorce attorneys at their beck and call. Their job is hardly an easy job.

Step 4: Commit Yourself

I once had a friend of mine tell me that there are no bad actors, just actors who aren't willing to "fully commit" themselves to their craft.

Just as I mentioned above that you have to make certain sacrifices to make it as an actor in Hollywood, one of those is your ego. If you're about looking cool, or trying to maintain a certain image, then acting might not be for you.

The best actors are those who are willing to let themselves be 100% consumed by the role they are playing. They physically become the person they portray.

If you're in the middle of delivering your lines and suddenly you let yourself drift back into your own life, you are not fully committed to the role and your performance will show it. You have to literally "forget yourself" to help ensure the quality of your performance.

Step 5: Be Nice

Hollywood is all about helping those you know because they might one day be in a position to help you as well. So, you need to remember this steadfast rule -- be nice to everyone. From agents' assistants to fellow cast members to whomever you meet in Hollywood. Remember, that assistant you treated poorly two years ago might one day become a casting director, film producer, talent agent or whatever. And trust me, they'll remember those who stomped on their toes on their way up the ladder.

Conversely, they'll remember those who were nice the whole way up and they'll be that much more inclined to help them achieve their own goals.

Step 6: Focus On The Craft -- Not the Agent

There are many actors I know who spent years worrying more about getting an agent than becoming a well trained actor.

Agents are a necessary evil, but they do not make you or break you (as much as they like to think they do). As many actors will attest, simply because they have a powerful agent does not guarantee their success.

The happiest actors are the working actors. And just because you might not be getting paid for your acting, doesn't mean that you can't be a working actor. Every experience is experience. So, spend less time seeking out an agent and more time seeking out acting opportunities yourself. From small plays to student films -- you'll be happily surprised how many seemingly insignificant opportunities are the ones that make your entire career.

Besides, when the time is right, an agent will come and seek you out.

QUICK NOTE ON AGENTS: If any agent makes you pay for their services up front than don't walk, RUN away from these guys. Legitimate talent agents only get paid when they get jobs for their clients. After all, what incentive do they have to find you a job if you've already given them their share in advance? No matter what they try to tell you, or however they try to validate charging you up front (e.g., personalized service, guaranteed jobs, headshots, etc.), do not under any circumstances pay these individuals a cent.

STEP 7: Take Some Improv

Regardless of what you may think of improvisation theater, it is one skill that most actors that I've worked with count on in a time of need. Especially for you theater actors who might be stuck with someone who freezes midway through their lines.

Beyond a crisis situation, improv is one of the few styles of acting where you have absolute freedom to discover what things you're good at, and which things could use some work.

As one actor friend told me, "improv is a way to discover your range as an actor while at the same time, it forces you to explore new territory while having to commit wholeheartedly to the situation at hand."

So, where you can find an improv class, consider adding it to your repertoire.

STEP 8: Know Your Range, Then Break Through It

We've all seen those actors who seem to constantly be working in a particular range of roles. For years, Clint Eastwood epitomized the "tough guy" image, Meg Ryan, the "cutesy, girl next door" even Tom Hanks was once the "goofy, nice guy." These actors made their name playing certain roles because they found a range they made work for them and stuck with it.

But then, as many of the better actors will often do, they decided to challenge themselves and break through the mold that audiences, producers and their agents had put them in.

Initially, it's somewhat important to find a range that works for you. It helps people (meaning, casting directors) know who you are and often when you're starting out, it's those memories that get you paid work.

But that doesn't mean you stop developing as an actor. Use the character traits you've discovered to get yourself working. But continue to learn new facets of your person. From voice characterization to exploring a wide variety of acting techniques. You will find that everything you learn in the acting realm will be put to use someday.

STEP 9: Be Persistent

In my article 8 Rules Every New Actor Should Know I discuss at length the need to develop persistence.

There is one general rule in Hollywood -- talent won't get you there, but persistence just might. If you are a dog with a bone, then Hollywood is the town for you. Those who are gritty and willing to give it their all day in and day out will have a much greater chance of success than the Juliard trained actor who waits around in his apartment for opportunity to come knocking.

The trick is, you have to get out there. Meet people and let them know what you are doing. It's absolutely essential to your success.

STEP 10: Have Patience

Rare is the true "overnight success." Sure, there are those actors that seem completely unknown one day, only to dominate the limelight the next. But the reality is that there were years of hard work and preparation that led them to that "sudden discovery."

Hollywood is a strange town. There are actors who have literally been working for decades when all the sudden, they're in a role that gets a bit of attention and suddenly, they're famous.

Patience is not only a virtue in Hollywood, it's an absolute must to keep from going insane. So develop your patience and you will enjoy the process of rising to stardom that much more even if you never end up getting there.

Wedding and Bridal Makeup Advice:

Your wedding day may be one of the happiest days of your life. It is important that you feel like you look your best. When you look at photographs of your wedding, you want to see your true beauty captured. If you are doing your own makeup, you will definitely want to invest in some good foundation. The right foundation is very important to help create and even glow to your skin. When it comes to photographs, using a powder foundation can cause you to appear washed out and paler than you may like. A liquid foundation tends to work best. Since you will be wearing white, you really don’t want makeup rubbing off on you all day long. And even though it might be necessary to touch up your makeup at least once during the long day, you don’t want to have to be worried about it all day long. The right foundation can help keep everything set without giving you that oily look.Since every girl is different, you will want may want to do a couple of practice makeovers to see what you like the best.Makeup is surprisingly often an overlooked item when planning your dream shaadi. Brides always focus on planning their outfits, jewellery, hair and mehndi but don’t realise that, to look amazingly stunning on their wedding day they really need to have good makeup applied by a professional. Bridal make up by its very nature is a unique requirement and your make up regime for the big day needs careful thought and consideration.

Use heavy-pigmented cream foundation and layer it with powder foundation to make the skin look smoother.
Use powder foundation on neck, ears and chest too so that you don’t seem to have a painted face.
Use a concealer shade similar to the foundation and blend both well.
Learn some camouflage makeup tricks and buy its products to use on your big day.
If you have combination skin, use water based foundation and a dry sponge.
Hide the under eye circles by applying concealer. Blend it towards the nose and use downward strokes.
For a perfect eye shape, use a small brush to blend a medium tone color from just below the brow arch downwards in a semi-circle motion.
Use light peach eye shadow as eyelid base.
Choose lip liner that blends easily with lipstick for that soft glossy look that looks good in photographs too.
Place the focus on the face either on eyes or on lip and underplay the other with neutral pink or brown shades.
Thin and small lips look more sensuous with light lip colors while fuller lips can use deep shades.

01.SALLY HANSEN XTREME WEAR IN ROCKSTAR PINK

When I first saw this nail color I knew I had to have it! Rockstar Pink is a glitter nail polish with mostly pink glitter. When you look closely at it you can see that it has blue, red, silver and gold and it is a very fine glitter, not chunky at all.
Usually when I buy glitter nail polish you need quite a few coats to make it look like it does in the bottle, or add a layer of colored polish underneath to make the glitter stand out. Not so with this baby! This is with just two coats! The formula is pretty thick and not runny at all. Another thing that I love about this nail polish is that it also dries really quickly.
You can find this and other Sally Hansen nail polishes at your local drug store and other stores like Target and Walmart. I bought mine from Target for $2.44 and the best part is that I had a $1 off coupon! $1.44 for some blinging nails? Yes please!!

02.MAC SEASONALLY SUPREME FALL 2011

Tokyo scenesters, Seoul trendies, Shanghai’s brand-conscious sophisto-chicks, all are contributing to make Asia a haute-pot that stylishly sizzles. To add to the frenzy: M·A·C’s new collection Sheen Supreme, a sweet and spicy palette of twelve cream-or-frost-finished shades that speaks to the region’s colour preferences in the fusion of Lipglass’ high-shine finish with the saturated colour of a Lipstick. Colour-customized, culturally tuned.

04.MILANI BAKED BLUSH IN LUMINOSO REVIEW

I’ve seen a lot of reviews on the new Milani baked blushes, so I decided to check them out for myself. The Target that I went to didn’t have a large selection, but they did have Luminoso which was the one that I was really wanting. It is a shimmery peach shade that would look great on ALL skin tones. It is very true to color when you see it in the pan. It’s not too orange or too pink,  it is the perfect peach shade. It has a very light sheen to it that is not overpowering or chunky glitter. Luminoso is very pigmented so if you have a fair skin tone you can apply it lightly, as for darker skin tones I think it would also give a beautiful peach glow.

I got mine at Target for around $8.00, and you can also find it in drugstores. It does come with a little brush that has it’s own little compartment under the pan and a small mirror.

This has quickly become one of my all time favorite blushes! You should try to pick this shade up, like I said I think it would look gorgeous on everybody!

05.TARTE FOR TRUE BLOOD COLLECTION

I am a big fan of HBO’s True Blood and was super excited when I read that Tarte has released a collection inspired by the hit series.

From Tarte: Get glamoured by tarte’s limited-edition collection, inspired by the hit HBO® series True Blood. Whether you’re a supernatural beauty or a vampy vixen, this collection contains versatile shades to take you from dawn to dusk, and well into the night. “We believe that this new line captures the soul of the supernatural hit television series and combines it with tarte’s essence of high-performance natural™ formulas and trendsetting, iconic products.”

Tarte worked with True Blood’s makeup artist to develop a collection that is true to the series. You can be inspired by Sooki and go with a natural look or go bold just like Pam. Tarte for True Blood will be  a limited edition three piece collection available at Sephora, Ulta and Tartecosmetics.com

06.JOHN FRIEDA PRECISION FOAM COLOR REVIEW

I went to my mailbox a few days ago and too my surprise there was a coupon for a free box of the new John Frieda Precision Foam Hair color! I immediately went to the store and picked up a box in the shade 4BG Medium Chocolate Brown.
They claim to be “The first ever premium permanent home hair colour that uses foam technology to deliver salon-quality results at home”.
First is very easy to mix and apply. You mix the color into the developer and tilt it five times, DO NOT shake. To dispense the foam you squeeze the bottle and apply the foam to your hand, then onto your hair. They do provide you with black salon quality gloves, not the cheap plastic ones that come with other at home hair

colors.

The application was very easy for me, and you get a lot of the product. Even though I have shoulder length hair, I have a ton of hair and usually have to buy two boxes so that I have enough to cover all of my hair. With this one I had more than enough for my hair to be completely covered.  You leave it on for 20 minutes then rinse off and use the provided conditioner and your done! There was no dripping on my clothes, bathroom, or my face, and it rinses out very easy and quickly. I can’t say that with other hair dyes I’ve tried. I normally spend 20 to 30 minutes rinsing my hair making sure I have gotten all the dye out. I was very happy with the end result, there were no streaks in my hair because it covered everything. The color does look a little darker, but I’m not sure if it has anything to do with the fact that I already had dyed my hair with another dark color months before.  You can’t lift color with color!
The packaging is more sleek than other dyes and they have a wide range of colors to choose from, 20 in total. It costs $10-13 and you can find it at Target, Walmart, Ulta, and drugstores. It may be a little pricier than other at home hair dyes, but I think it’s worth the money! Easy, mess free, and great results!

08.BOBBI BROWN NATURAL FINISH LONG LASTING FOUNDATION REVIEW

Not too long ago I was at Nordstroms and I stopped by their Bobbi Brown counter to check out some of their foundations. I haven’t used Bobbi Brown foundations in years, so I wanted to give them another try. What caught my eye was their Natural Finish Long Lasting Foundation.
From Bobbi Brown:Oil-free, all-day wear so you’ll have soft-matte, even-looking skin without having to pile on powder throughout the day, this is Bobbi’s soft-matte “sequel” to our (now discontinued) Oil-Free Finish Foundation. Sponge-like powders absorb excess oil on the surface of the skin, while emollients lock in moisture to ensure skin remains perfectly balanced. Transfer-resistant formula helps create a barrier against heat and humidity for 8 hours of wear so makeup stays in place. Perfect for oily and normal/combination skin.
Since I have oily-combination skin this sounded like it would be perfect for me to try out. After a few tries the MUA decided that my color was Warm Natural 4.5. Since I have such a hard time finding the right foundation shade I decided to get a sample rather than buying an entire bottle and returning it if I wasn’t happy with it.
When I first tried it out the color looked a bit too pink, which is my problem with all foundations! But, when I started to blend it out, it matched my skin color perfectly! It blends very easily unlike other long lasting foundations. The one thing that  I did notice was that it did not give me enough coverage with just one coat. I had to build it on so that I could get the coverage I like.  As for the oil control and long lasting claims, I think it lives up to both. I didn’t find the need to touch up my t-zone as often as I normally do, and it did last all day. It didn’t oxidize or shift on my skin like other foundation would on oily skin.  The finish is a semi-matte, and looks a more on the matte side, but without the powdery effect.

09.MALLY COSMETICS MASCARA REVIEW

After doing my last review on Mally Cosmetics one of my readers, Velya, suggested that I try her mascara. I looked into it and ordered mine shortly after. Mally Cosmetics  mascara is one of her top sellers. According to Mally, before she made the mascara she used to spend hours (I don’t know about that) using a mascara, brush, pigments and a comb creating her famous clients’ voluminous, long lashes. She finally combined her method and bottled it up to create her Volumizing mascara.

After I received it I quickly washed off my eye makeup and tried this bad boy out. And I have to say that I am impressed! I love the pigmentation, it is one of the darkest mascaras I have tried. The formula is slightly drier and it almost seems like it’s old but it doesn’t apply like so. It doesn’t flake off and lasts for quite some time.  After two coats my lashes definitely looked more voluminous. The mascara didn’t really lengthen though, so that was a little disappointing. When I saw her on QVC she said numerous times that if you would keep on applying it, your lashes would look scary long! I didn’t really find that to be true, but I think I may combine a lengthening mascara plus this one to create long, voluminous, gorgeous lashes! The one thing that I have noticed, is that I always seem to get some of this on my lid, this is not a problem I have with other mascaras, so I’m not sure what the deal is!
I totally recommend this mascara if you love thick, dark lashes. I can see why it’s a favorite. You can find this mascara on Mallybeauty.com for $20.00 or QVC.com for $28.00/2. I would go with QVC it’s a better deal!

If you like a sheer to medium long lasting foundation I would recommend this foundation. It comes in a wide range of shades, 20 in total. So I’m sure most of you won’t have a hard time finding a shade that is right for you.  It is packaged in a pretty glass bottle that tends to make the foundation appear a little lighter than it actually is.  And here is some great news, it comes with a pump!
Hope this review was helpful!
