Aamir Khan Biography

Aamir Khan, the thinking man’s superstar, is one of those artists in the tinsel town who have managed to please the masses as much as the classes, something that only the very few have managed in India.
Born on March 14, 1965 in Mumbai, Aamir is known for his out-of-the-box roles and his outspoken ways. His resolve from the very beginning of his career to not attend any award function makes him stand out in the crowd of a highly narcissistic group of individuals who form the Hindi film industry. The fact that his guaranteed absence from award ceremonies hasn’t stopped the organisers from showering him with accolades and awards speaks volumes about his work. He has won at least six major ‘Best Actor’ awards, besides being the producer for the highly acclaimed Lagaan (2002), which got nominated for Oscars as the best foreign language film.
With Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan, Aamir is one of the most dependable and commercially viable actors in the country (Big B being in his own league!).
Aamir was born in Mumbai into family that was in the business of selling dreams, i.e. Cinema. His father Tahir Hussain was a producer while his uncle Nasir Hussain was a director. His cousin Tariq was an actor in the 1970s whose claim to fame were family productions, Yaadon Ki Baraat and Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin, both rather successful films.
Although Aamir appeared as a child actor in Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973), his first film as a lead actor came with Holi (1984), more or less a forgetful film. He tasted commercial success with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), where his pairing with Juhi Chawla and his ‘chocolate boy’ looks made him some sort of an icon amongst the youth.
In the next few years he gave one hit after another, quite a few of them with Juhi Chawla (his co-star from QSQT). There was Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander, Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahi, Dil, Andaz Apna Apna and host of such rom-coms. Raja Hindustani (1996) was a landmark hit, not only for Aamir but for the entire film industry. But still something was lacking as all his roles were an extension of his ‘chocolate boy’ image which was entrenched in the public memory since QSQT.
He started changing in late 90s with Ghulam, Sarfarosh (both 1998) and followed it up with the very ‘arty’ Earth (1999). Winds of change were affecting Aamir’s career.
With the turn of century Aamir turned producer and with Ashutosh Gowariker gave India its first magnum opus in the 21st century, the Academy Award nominated Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001). But some such risks backfired as was seen in the case of Ketan Mehta's "The Rising" (2005), a film for which Aamir took a four year break (an unheard event in Bollywood) but in return got only brickbats.
Dil Chahta Hai (2001) was another showcase of the versatility of Aamir Khan as the film broke new grounds by showing Indian urban youth as they really are today. But the film that made Aamir the youth icon that he has become now is Rakeysh ...
