Makeup W/O Looking Like Makeup - FOTD/Tutorial and Day 1: Simple, Natural Look (you should look like you’re not even wearing makeup!)
POSTED BY KAYE EH AT 04:39 31 JULY 2011
I am normally a rainbow-vomited-on-my-face type of girl. But my good friend Emily was lamenting about how it is hard to wear minimal makeup or rather, makeup w/o looking like makeup. For the purpose of this post, I used as much makeup as humanly possible just to prove that it's totally possible, haha. I would like to note that for most people w/ folds, eyeshadow in your crease area is not going to look as silly as it does on my monolids. Also, ignore the right side of my face - it's rebelling against me right now. For actual makeup minimalists, I'll be including a couple of ideas and tips for sleeping in as long as humanly possible!
Tips for minimal makeup! - Products used. - Tutorial and pictures.
If you genuinely don't like fussing around in the morning or before you head out, there are some ways to get around spending 15 precious minutes of your time putting on a face. Some of these will seem like, "DUH," but hopefully something is helpful! :)
1-Wash your face before you go to bed/remove all of your makeup.
I know, I know, seems like a given, right? Well, I know that there are numerous nights where I am so tired, I just want to crash. I don't want to fuss w/ removing my makeup and washing my face. I keep face wipes by my bed, but I'm sure everyone has woken up to raccoon eyes at least once. Not only is that not great for your skin, it's just going to take longer to scrub off your face since it had all night to dry and smear into your pores. Of course, if you're a minimalist, you wouldn't need to worry about this anyway. ;)
2-Skin care is actually important.
Again, another one that just is a given, butttttt...I know I slack on moisturizing and toning and all that good stuff. I kick my ass in gear by reminding myself that the better I can get my skin to look, the less slap I need to wear. That being said, there are some things that are genetic and not due to poor skin habits, like acne and Rosacea, and as long as you're not neglecting your skin entirely, some times there's nothing you can do.
3-It's okay to have a break.
I go weeks w/o wearing foundation. Not because my skin is great (it's not; I've got scaly red patches and oily skin to boot) but because I like to give my skin a breather sometimes. I'm not sure if this REALLY has any effect on my skin in a physical sense, but it helps me to be more confident in how I look w/o makeup, which allows me to wear less and less.
4-Multi-use products are great.
Even though I have oily skin, I'll use a lot of cream products when I'm in a hurry. I can set them w/ a setting powder and the finish just seems more natural than layering on a ton of powders. I double up my concealers as highlighters, cream blushes can be lip colors and eyeshadows, etc. When my makeup starts breaking down (thanks to that oily t-zone!), cream products just seem to disappear a bit more evenly for me. Lots of brands make those three-in-one products that you can use for cheeks, eyes, and lips.
Another good thing is eyeshadow primer/bases. Urban Decay makes one that has their Primer Potion in it. MAC has their Paint Pots, Benefit has a Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow, and from the drugstore, Covergirl started making a colored primer/base as well. All of these products are good because not only can they be used as actual eyeshadow color bases and primers in one, they're tinted and can be used on their own w/o needing anything else. Blend w/ your finger and go! The built-in primer means they won't crease or budge.
5-Less CAN be more.
You could get away w/ just using a powder bronzer, a concealer (and that's only if you really need it), and a face powder. You can use the bronzer to contour your face and as your crease color. Smudge the bronzer into your lashlines and you have subtle eyeliner. The face powder as an all-over lid color and browbone highlight, as well as all over your face, and concealer undereye circles right up to your lower lashline and you'll look decently awake. Throw in a white/skintone eyeliner and you can line your waterline and use it as a highlighter on your face (DO NOT USE IT ON YOUR EYE UNTIL YOU'VE RESHARPENED IT OR SANITIZED IT - you DO NOT want to use it on your face and then put it near your eye...I don't think I have to explain this one!) Clear mascara for lashes and brows and lip balm if you want.
